Artificial intelligence has gone from being a Silicon Valley obsession to one of the biggest political and economic issues in Washington.

And President Donald Trump is paying very close attention.
But saying Trump is simply “afraid of AI” would be misleading. In fact, his administration has generally pushed in the opposite direction: faster development, fewer regulatory barriers and massive investment in American AI infrastructure.
So what exactly is Trump worried about?
The answer appears to be less about artificial intelligence becoming too powerful and more about who controls it.
For the Trump administration, AI has increasingly become connected to several much bigger questions: Can the United States stay ahead of China? Who will manufacture the chips powering future AI systems? Where will the enormous amounts of electricity needed by AI data centers come from? Can the U.S. military maintain a technological advantage? And will regulation slow American companies while competitors abroad continue accelerating?
Those questions help explain Trump’s AI policy in 2026.
And recent developments suggest that AI could become one of the defining economic and geopolitical issues of his second term.
Trump Doesn’t Appear to Fear AI — He Fears Losing the AI Race

Trump’s approach to artificial intelligence is sometimes described simply as “deregulation.”
The reality is more complicated.
In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order aimed at removing barriers to American AI leadership and ordered officials to develop a national AI Action Plan.

Building enough data centers and energy infrastructure.
Using AI for defense and cybersecurity.
Preventing regulation from slowing American companies.
And ensuring that U.S. technology remains influential internationally.
